Official abshoo school bag catalogue
You cannot try a backpack on before the parcel arrives, so every abshoo card says what the photograph cannot: how tall the bag is, how many litres go in it, what size laptop the sleeve was built for and which ages the straps adjust to. Preschool packs from twenty dollars, school bookbags, clear backpacks cut to the published stadium rule, and travel backpacks up to 34 litres.
Start with what people buy most
The one that started it · Classic Travel Backpack01Six shelves
Nearly everything here costs between thirteen and fifty dollars, so price will not decide it. The child will: how tall their back is, how far they walk, whether the gate wants to see inside the bag, and whether lunch travels with it.

03What it is made of
Everything on an abshoo card rests on two things: what the panel is made of and how the panels are joined. Both are printed. Where a bag names a litre figure or a laptop size, that figure comes from our product data and not from a paragraph somebody typed.

The body of every bag except the clear shelf. Tightly woven, dyed through, finished so water beads rather than soaks. It is what lets a bag be wiped with a cloth instead of washed, and it is the reason a print stays a print after a year of sun on a playground.
The clear shelf. A thick transparent sheet, bound at every edge with fabric webbing, because a clear bag fails at the corners and the seams and never in the middle of a panel. The binding is what separates a bag that lasts a season from a bag that splits in October.
The four inches of stitching that carry the whole load. A bar tack is a short row of stitches worked back and forth across the webbing so the thread cannot walk out of the fabric under a shifting weight. Every bag here gets one at each strap, whatever the bag costs.
Foam behind a mesh face, on the panel against the back and along both straps. It spreads a load across a wider area and keeps a pencil case from being felt through the panel. Both professional bodies we quote ask for it by name; neither says more padding means less pain.
| What the card says | What it means when you carry it | Where it turns up |
|---|---|---|
| Water-resistant polyester | Beads a shower and a spilled bottle; not a waterproof rating | Every shelf except the clear backpacks |
| Clear PVC | A gate can see inside without opening it; edges bound in webbing | The nine clear backpacks and the stadium crossbody |
| Padded laptop sleeve | A separate lined pocket cut to the diagonal named on the card | Most of the college and school shelves, up to 17 inches |
| Chest strap | A clip across the front that stops the straps sliding off small shoulders | Five of the nine kids' backpacks |
| Luggage strap | A sleeve across the back that slides over a suitcase handle | Six of the nine college backpacks |
| Insulated lining | A foil-faced inner layer that slows the exchange of heat | The two lunch bags and one backpack set |
| Litres, 18 to 34 | Roughly a day of lectures at 22 and a long weekend at 34 | The college and school shelves |
| Height, 11.8 to 18 inches | How much back the bag covers, which is what age really means | Every backpack on the site |
A material describes what a bag is made of, not how long it lasts. the abshoo way prints the height, the litre figure and the sleeve size on every card, one under the other.
04For a gate that has to see inside
Three of these are cut to the published 12 by 6 by 12-inch rule. The larger ones are the ones parents buy when a school district asks for a clear bag every day rather than one Saturday.

05On a back, not on a hanger
A clear pack at a gate, a dinosaur bag on a preschool peg, a laptop sleeve with a machine in it, a lunch bag clipped to a strap. What comes out of the box, once it is being carried.

06Nine years of the same three panels
A school bag fails in two places and both of them are joins. Most of what the abshoo bench has changed since 2017 has happened at those two joins and nowhere else.

A backpack gives up where the shoulder strap meets the body, and it gives up at the base. The first join carries everything in the bag through a single line of stitching about four inches long; the second spends eight hours a day with a water bottle standing on it and gets dragged along a corridor floor on the way home. Every bag in this range is bar-tacked at the strap join, a short dense row of stitches worked back and forth across the webbing, and doubled through the base panel. Neither of those shows in a photograph, and that is the reason we write them down.
The cloth has barely moved. It is a high-density polyester with a water-resistant finish, which is not the same as waterproof: it turns a shower and a knocked-over bottle, and it will not survive a walk home in February rain with the bag on your back. On the clear shelf the cloth is not cloth at all but a heavy-gauge PVC panel with a fabric-bound edge, because a transparent bag fails at the edges long before it fails in the middle.
What has changed is the number of sizes. The range started as one adult bookbag and grew downward: the kindergarten pack at 14.2 inches, then the 11.8-inch preschool bag for a child who is two, then the 15.5-inch elementary size in between. Nine years in, everyone at abshoo still works to the same six shelves, and the growth has been in the heights and the prints rather than in the count of different bags.
A finish on the outside face of the polyester that makes water bead and run off rather than soak in. It handles a shower between buildings, a dropped bottle and wet grass. It is not a waterproof rating, there is no seam sealing behind it, and a bag left out in a downpour will let water through the zip. Anything electronic that must stay dry goes in a sleeve of its own.
07The small backs
Eleven-point-eight inches for a two-year-old, fifteen and a half for an eight-year-old, and a chest strap on most of them. The dinosaur is the child's decision; the inches are yours.

08What you are choosing between
School bags get bought by photograph in August and judged in February. Two rows below go against us: a premium outdoor pack outlasts ours, and a licensed character bag will make a five-year-old happier on the first morning than anything on this site.
| abshoo | Premium outdoor brand | Supermarket own-brand | Licensed character bag | Adult work backpack | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it costs | Thirteen to fifty dollars | Three to six times more | About the same | A little more | Two to four times more |
| Height printed before you buy | On the card, in inches | On the product page | Rarely | Almost never | Sometimes |
| Litre figure printed | On the card where the maker gives one | Always | No | No | Usually |
| Sizes for a small child | Three heights from 11.8 inches up | Usually one child size | One size | One size | None |
| Chest strap on the small packs | On five of the nine | Yes, on the child range | Sometimes | Sometimes | No |
| Clear version for a gate | Nine of them, three cut to the stadium box | No | Occasionally, one size | No | No |
| The catch | A twenty-dollar bag will not see four school years | You will not buy a new one every August | The zip is where it shows | The character stops being cool | Too tall for a nine-year-old's back |
Prices are the range across this catalogue at our last update; the other four columns describe the category rather than any one shop.
09The part that is not ours to certify
Three of the things this range is bought for are not our claims to make: how much a child should carry, what a product made for a child may contain, and what a venue will let through a gate. All three are set out here under the bodies that publish them.
The American Academy of Pediatrics puts the ceiling for a packed school bag at fifteen per cent of the child's body weight: a hundred-pound child, fifteen pounds. Their test for it needs no scale: if the child leans forward to carry the bag, it is too heavy. They also warn that a bigger bag simply gets filled, and that is why the heights on this site matter more than the litres.
American Academy of Pediatrics, read September 5, 2026The orthopaedic guidance asks for two wide padded shoulder straps, a padded back, a waist or chest strap when the load is heavy, and a lightweight bag to start from. It also says, flatly, that heavy backpacks do not cause scoliosis, which develops in about five per cent of children in adolescence whatever they carry. What a badly worn bag does cause is back, neck and shoulder pain.
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (OrthoInfo), read September 5, 2026A children's product sold in the United States is banned outright if an accessible component carries more than 100 parts per million of lead, and the importer or maker must issue a Children's Product Certificate saying so. An exemption from testing is not an exemption from the limit: if the product as received exceeds it, the firm is still liable. That paperwork sits with the importer of record rather than with a catalogue, so this page points at the rule instead of printing a certificate.
US Consumer Product Safety Commission, read September 5, 2026The federal cap on eight phthalates at 0.1 per cent applies to a children's toy, meaning something a child of twelve or under plays with, or to a child care article for sleeping, feeding, sucking or teething under the age of three. A backpack is neither, so the rule does not cover it and a bag cannot honestly wear it as a badge. We would rather say that plainly than borrow a number that was written for something else.
US Consumer Product Safety Commission, read September 5, 2026This section is general information about carrying a school bag and about how products for children are regulated in the United States. It is not medical advice and it is not a certificate for any one bag. The fifteen per cent figure is a guideline about a load, not a property of a product: no strap, panel or belt sold here makes a heavy bag light. Bag rules at a venue are set by the venue and change; the one that counts is the one on their own site on the day you go.

11Straight to a bag
Laptop sleeves, luggage straps, toddler heights and the matched sets first; the rest are one click away, each page with its bags, prices, colourways and heights.
A laptop sleeve is the one feature people search for by number, and this page is every abshoo bag that names one. The sizes run 15, 15.3, 15.6 and 17 inches, they are diagonals rather than widths, and a bag that does not name a size on its card does not have a sleeve at all. That includes bags from four different shelves, and gathering them here saves opening four pages to compare two numbers.
A luggage strap is a fabric sleeve stitched across the back panel that slides over the extended handle of a wheeled case. It is the difference between pulling one thing through an airport and carrying two, and it is the single feature that turns a school bag into a travel bag. Eight bags in the abshoo range have one, and the largest of them holds 34 litres.
The smallest bags in the range are not scaled-down school bags; they are three separate heights. Eleven-point-eight inches reaches from the shoulders of a two-year-old to just above the waist. Fourteen-point-two is the kindergarten size. Fifteen and a half covers the elementary years. Choosing between them by inches rather than by the age printed on a label is the single decision that matters here.
A lunch bag that matches the backpack is a lunch bag that gets picked up off the kitchen counter, and that is most of the argument for a set. The other part is money: two matched pieces cost less than the two bought apart. This page holds the four sets and the three lunch bags that are sold on their own, so both routes are on one screen.
12The brand, at length
Six shelves, forty-one bags and one organising idea: a bag is chosen by the back that carries it, and everything else follows from that.
abshoo makes school bags and the things that ride beside them. Not luggage, not hiking packs, not handbags that happen to have straps: bags that go to a classroom, a lecture hall or a stadium gate and come home again. That narrow brief is the reason the catalogue looks the way it does: forty-one bags where a general bag brand would have four hundred, and six shelves that between them cover a child from the year they start nursery to the year they leave college.
Read the shelves in order and they follow a person up through school. The kids' shelf starts at 11.8 inches tall, which is a bag that reaches from the shoulders of a two-year-old to somewhere above the waist and no further. The next step up is 14.2 inches for kindergarten, then 15.5 for the elementary years. School bookbags take over at around 17.7 inches with a laptop sleeve in them, and the college shelf runs from 18 litres to 34 in the same height. Nobody planned that ladder on a whiteboard; it grew because customers kept asking for the same bag one size smaller.
The two shelves that sit outside the ladder are there for reasons that have nothing to do with age. Clear backpacks are bought because a gate asks to see inside, and that request comes to a six-year-old and a nineteen-year-old in exactly the same words. Lunch bags and sets exist because a lunch has to travel, and a lunch bag that matches the backpack is a lunch bag that gets picked up off the kitchen counter.

| School stage | Bag height on this site | What the shelf is called | Roughly what fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nursery and preschool, about 2 to 4 | 11.8 inches | Kids' backpacks | A change of clothes, a beaker, a soft toy |
| Kindergarten, about 4 to 6 | 14.2 inches | Kids' backpacks | A lunch box, a folder, a water bottle |
| Elementary, about 6 to 10 | 15.5 inches | Kids' backpacks | Two readers, a lunch bag, a PE kit |
| Middle and high school | 17.7 inches, 24 to 27 litres | School bookbags | Three textbooks, a binder, a 15.6-inch laptop |
| College and commuting | 18 inches, 18 to 34 litres | College backpacks | A laptop to 17 inches, a weekend of clothes at 34 litres |
| Any age, at a gate | 12 by 12 by 6 to 17.7 inches | Clear backpacks | Whatever security can see from outside |
The range runs from a thirteen-dollar clear stadium pouch to a forty-six-dollar backpack and lunch set, and the spread inside it is not a quality ladder. A bag costs more here for three reasons and they are all visible on the card: it is bigger, it has a padded laptop sleeve in it, or it arrives as two matched pieces instead of one. The classic travel backpack that carries the largest pool of ratings on the site is also one of the cheapest things on it, which tells you where the volume is. The abshoo catalogue is not built to sell you upward.
Three limits belong in the same breath as the range, because each of them is a place where a bag brand is usually tempted to say more than it knows. The first is a child's back. The guidance quoted on this site, from the American Academy of Pediatrics and from the orthopaedic surgeons, describes a load and how it is carried, and both bodies keep it there deliberately. A padded strap spreads fifteen pounds of textbooks over a wider area of shoulder. It leaves fifteen pounds exactly where they were, and the paediatric guidance says in so many words that more padding does not mean less pain.
The second limit is weather. Every bag except the clear shelf carries a water-resistant finish, which turns a shower between buildings, a knocked-over bottle and wet grass. A bag carried through steady rain for twenty minutes lets water past the zip, because there is no seam sealing behind the finish and a resistant cloth is not a sealed one. Those are two different words for two different things, and the card prints the accurate one.
The third is paperwork. A children's product sold in the United States has to meet public federal limits on what it may contain, and the certificate that says it does belongs to the importer of record. This catalogue links to the pages that set those rules and describes what they cover and what they leave out, which is a smaller and more useful claim than a badge printed on a photograph.
The longer answer to “what is this brand” lives on Read what abshoo makes and who it is for.
13Before you click
The commonest mistake is buying by the age on the label. Take two measurements once, weigh the bag loaded, and the abshoo catalogue turns into a filter.
Tape from the bony bump at the base of the neck down to the top of the hip bones. That number is what the height on a card is answering. A bag taller than the back it sits on rides on the bottom rather than the shoulders, and no strap adjustment fixes it: at 11.8, 14.2, 15.5 and 17.7 inches, the abshoo range gives you four rungs to land on.
Stand on the scale holding the packed bag, stand on it again without, and take the difference. Fifteen per cent of the child is the paediatric ceiling, so a sixty-pound seven-year-old is carrying nine pounds at most. Do this once in September and you will know for the rest of the year which books stay in the locker.
A sleeve cut for 15.6 inches holds a 15.6-inch machine and not a 17. Measure the screen corner to corner if you are not sure, and remember that a case around the laptop adds enough to matter. Eight of the nine college bags name a sleeve size on the card; the ones that do not name one do not have one.
If the bag is for a stadium, open the venue's own bag policy page before you order. The league rule is 12 by 6 by 12 inches with no hardware or decoration concealing any part of the bag, and three of our clear packs are cut to it — but an individual stadium is allowed to be stricter, and a school district writes its own rule entirely.
A bottle inside the main compartment leans against the books; a bottle in a side pocket does not. Four of the nine kids' bags have a bottle pocket and the cards say which. If a child is the kind who tips a bottle over once a term, this is the single feature worth choosing on.
A matched set costs less than the two pieces bought apart and it solves the morning, but it commits you to one print for both. A separate insulated lunch bag lets a child change their mind about dinosaurs in March without a new backpack. Both routes exist on this site and the sets shelf says which bags come paired.
14In their words
Printed as they came, with the bag each one names linked underneath. Three of them are complaints, and those are the three worth reading twice.
★★★★★
A bag bought to grow intoFor the price of this backpack, I was not expecting to get very good quality. But I am very impressed with this backpacks construction, the stitching is great and has held up for the entire school year and still looks brand new. The backpack is a tad bit big for a child in kindergarten or maybe 1st grade but they can grow into this. The interior section is big and can carry a handful of books, and a lunch bag as well a 18oz Nalgene bottle. The only issue I have seen with this bag is the side pockets are not capable of holding a large water bottle. We were never able to get her water bottle to fit so we had to stored it inside the backpack which is fine.
★★★★☆
The third one in three yearsI've bought this 3 times over the past 3 years. My daughter loves this back pack. It does last the entire school year, but with daily use, you'll probably only get one school year out of it. Which for the price, I'm happy with. We've never had a strap break or any issues.
★★★☆☆
Heavy textbooks, three starsI got this backpack for my kids to carry heavy books, but it isn't quite sturdy enough for that. The material feels thin, and while it's listed as water-resistant, it doesn't give me much confidence for long-term durability. It only holds its form when packed full, which makes it feel a little floppy otherwise. On the plus side, the size is convenient and it has plenty of compartments for organization, which is great for keeping school or travel items sorted. The USB charging port is a nice touch for convenience.
★★★★★
A five-year-old at an airportI bought this for a summer trip and needed something with more room for my little 5 year old. He loved that it had side drink pockets like his brother and I loved that it had the chest strap so it didn't slide off his little shoulders. His little toddler backpack was too small for many of his items.
★★★★★
Preschool, and a whistle on the buckleThis backpack is so cute and perfect for my tiny girl. She uses it for preschool so we don't need it to be big enough to store folders, which this backpack is too small for. It's big enough for her spare clothes, and lots more! We have used it on multiple flights as well. My favorite part is that it clips on so the straps won't fall off and has a little hook on the front. There is a whistle on the clips, so just a warning to the parents whose kids love to make loud noises. It's a sturdy bag, I haven't had any issues with ripped seams or zippers breaking.
★★★★★
A toddler on a long tripIt held snacks and toys and games and a water bottle and monster trucks and stickers and a coloring book and crayons and whatever else he snuck into it when we weren't looking. If your toddler is messy be prepared for some stains as it is lighter in color, but we figure it just comes with the territory.
★★★★★
A clear bag required at workVery thick and durable!! It has 4 different compartments which I appreciate because it makes it easier to find things, everything isn't piled up in one single compartment like my previous backpack. The zipper seems to be high quality as well, feels very durable. I have to have a clear backpack at work.
★★★★☆
Six weeks of daily useThis bag looks and feels great. It has little slits where I can put and organize my stuff which I love. Only one thing I will say is that the leather like material that comes tied around the zippers should just be removed entirely. Also the little "handle" on top of the back begins to rip after a while and I've had this back for about a month and a half.
★★★★★
Packing a lunch and a juiceShe takes a box with her sandwich and whatever else and it fits along with a small diet soda or a juice, plus ice pack for it. The backpack it's self has lots of space as well. Only thing is the side pockets could have been a little bigger in the opening.
15School Run
How much a school bag should weigh and how to check it in a kitchen, what a clear-bag rule really says before you buy for a gate, and how to read a height, a litre figure and an age label against one particular child.
Fifteen per cent of the child is the number two professional bodies keep repeating. What it works out to at six, at ten and at fifteen, how to measure it with a bathroom scale in under a minute, and what actually comes out of the bag when it is over.
The stadium rule is twelve by six by twelve, and the sentence that turns bags away at the gate is the one after it. What the published policy actually says, why a school district rule is a different animal, and how to tell a bag that will pass from one that will not.
An age on a label is a guess at a measurement anybody can take in ten seconds. How to measure the back that has to carry the bag, what a litre figure is really telling you, why a laptop diagonal is not a width, and when to buy the next size up.
16Questions people send us
Eight of them. Longer answers live on the shelf pages and in School Run.
Every buying button on this site opens the bag you were looking at, in the colourway you chose, at our retail partner. That is where you pick the size, where the payment, the delivery and any exchange happen, and the price you see there is the price you pay.
If you would rather see the whole range in one go, the button at the foot of every page opens the catalogue rather than a single bag.
Take one measurement: from the bony bump at the base of the neck down to the top of the hip bones. That is the length of back the bag has to sit on, and it is what the height in inches on every card is answering. The range gives you four rungs to land on, at 11.8, 14.2, 15.5 and 17.7 inches, and the nearest one under that measurement is the bag.
The age on a label is a shorthand for the same thing and it is a rougher one. A tall seven-year-old is usually better off in the bag marked for eight, and buying up two sizes to get an extra year out of it puts a bag on a child that hangs below the bottom and swings on every step.
No more than fifteen per cent of what the child weighs, which is the ceiling the American Academy of Pediatrics gives: a hundred-pound child, fifteen pounds. Weigh it the easy way: stand on a bathroom scale holding the packed bag, stand on it again without, and take the difference.
Their test without a scale is simpler still. If the child leans forward to carry the bag, it is too heavy. No feature on any bag changes that number, and the same guidance warns that a bigger bag simply gets filled.
Three of the nine are cut to the published rule, which is a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, with no buckle, grommet, hardware or decoration concealing any part of the bag.
What no maker can promise is the gate itself. An individual venue is allowed to be stricter than the league policy, and a school district writes its own rule from scratch. Open the venue's own bag page before you order rather than after.
Water-resistant, and the difference matters on a walk home. The polyester carries a finish that makes water bead and run off, so a shower between buildings, a knocked-over bottle and wet grass are all fine. There is no seam sealing and no waterproof rating behind it.
In steady rain with the bag on a back for twenty minutes, water finds the zip. If something in there has to stay dry, it goes in a sleeve of its own.
We would rather you did not. A machine cycle beats the water-resistant finish out of the cloth and the shape out of the foam in the back panel, and a bag that comes out of a drum is never quite the bag that went in.
A damp cloth, a little soap and an hour standing open does almost everything a wash would. For the inside, turn it upside down over a bin first; most of what is in there is pencil shavings.
Usually the sleeve and the pockets rather than the shell. Two bags at 17.7 inches can be a plain bookbag and a laptop bag, and what separates them is a padded sleeve cut to a named diagonal and how many pockets the front carries. The card prints both.
On the clear shelf the same question has a different answer: the difference between two transparent bags of the same height is usually whether the edges are bound in webbing and whether anything opaque is covering a panel, which is what a gate looks at.
Through a morning with a frozen block in it, yes. The insulated bags have a foil-faced lining that slows the exchange of heat; what they do not have is any power, so on a warm day with nothing frozen in the bag, lunch reaches room temperature by the middle of the afternoon.
A frozen juice carton does the same job as a proper block and gets drunk at lunchtime, which is the trick most parents arrive at by October.
